Boeing P-26 Pursuit Fighter

Conceived when military strategy and ideology foresaw aircraft in short range roles. The P-26 was an open cockpit, single seat, mono winged pursuit aircraft, equipped with synchronized 50 caliber machine guns and (2) 100lb bombs. Its single 500hp, 9 cylinder radial air cooled engine, combined with its light weight enabled it to fly 235 mph, a climbing rate of 2,360 feet per minute and have a operating ceiling of 27,000 feet. Designed in 1931 and first flown in March of 1932, it was the Army Air Corps initial all metal fighter with 111 aircraft delivered by Boeing in 1934. Shortly after the outbreak of WWII the were discarded in favor of the Curtiss P-40 "Warhawk".

These photos taken by Alex Wisniewski who served in the U.S. Army in 1936 and later with the Army Air Corps over Europe during WWII.
