Curtiss P-40 "Warhawk"

After the surprise December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, the P-40 assumed a position with U.S. Army Air Corps and allied forces as a valuable fighter-bomber during the initial outbreak of WWII with 16,800 being produced by the wars end. Its 1938 design utilized an in-line (12) cylinder, water cooled 1,360 horsepower engine, a single seat with an armored, enclosed canopy cockpit, and armed with (6) 50 caliber wing mounted machine guns with provisions for (1) 500 lb bomb. Although not remarkable in performance against German Messerschmitts, its mass produced numbers served in Europe, North Africa, and Pacific theaters. Through allied Lend-Lease Act programs the British, Canadian, New Zealand and Russian Air Forces received 1,200 P-40's designated as the "Tomahawk's" and 3,300 "Kittyhawk's" variants with self sealing fuel tanks, increased bomb capacity and cockpit armor.

Edward Goethe, Housatonic, MA photographed various aircraft as he served with the 389th Air Service Squadron of the 5th Air Corps, Ed island hopped from Australia to Layte of the Philippine Islands.
