- Alexander Wisniewski *** U.S. Army/Air Corps *** 1936-1944
- Alex's 1st
enlistment was in February 1936-1939, with the U.S. Army, 7th
Field Artillery. Basic training was at Fort Devons, MA, was stationed
at Fort Ethan Allen in Vermont and later Monteray, California.
While only a few short years before the start of WWII, his photographs
from this era show an Army that still had units of Cavalry horse
drawn weapons, early aircraft of the Army Air Corps and outdated
armor. In contrast are photographs of the evaluation and exhibit
of armor, artillery, the M-1 Garand and other infantry weapons
utilized in WWII. With the outbreak of war on the horizon, Alex
reenlisted into the Army Air Corps, was trained as an aircraft
mechanic in November 1941 at Chanute Air Field, Illinois and
then transferred to Ogden Air Depot, Utah. During the war he
flew as a flight mechanic on several missions over Germany serving
with Group H, 303rd Bombardment Group, 8th Air Force in England.
On January 11, 1944, on his 12th bombing mission, Staff Sergeant
Alexander "Tish" Wisniewski was killed in action over
Germany.
