Republic F-84 "Thunderjet"

Developed in 1945 and first flown in 1946, the F-84 "Thunderjet" had many first's. It was the first jet fighter with capability to deliver nuclear weapons, plus in September 1946 it set a new speed record of 611 mph, and in September of 1950 with its in-flight refueling ability it became the first jet fighter to cross the Atlantic nonstop. Flown by a single pilot, it had a distinctive straight wing with fuel pods on its wing tips, later this would be replaced by a swept wing design. Powered by a single jet engine that produced 5,200 lbs of thrust, the F-84 was considered marginal in performance, especially at take-off when loaded maximum payload. Armed with (6) .50 caliber machine guns and up to 6,000 lbs of rockets and bombs, the F-84 did see service during the Korean War and some photo reconnaissance during the Cold War of the 1950's. Over 3,000 would be manufactured until it's retirement in 1956.
