North American AT-6 "Texan"

As a advanced combat trainer, the "Texan" prepared Army, Marine and Navy pilots in the basics of gunnery, fighter tactics and for some carrier landings. Powered by a 550 hp engine and with a maximum air speed of 200 mph, the AT-6 was responsive, rugged and forgiving of inexperience. Equipped with (2).30 caliber machine gun in its nose and (1) manually operated .30 caliber machine gun in the rear quarters of its tandem cockpit, the pilot and rear gunner could live fire on towed sleeve targets. Over 17,000 variants of the AT-6 series were manufactured. During WWII to save precious alloy metals, the AT-6 was constructed out of plywood and bonded fabric covering. Post WWII and the Korean War found the AT-6 reused in training, reconnaissance and forward artillery surveillance.
