McDonnell-Douglas A-4 "Skyhawk"

Development of the A-4 "Skyhawk" was started during the Korean War and first flew in 1954. The U.S. Navy received initial delivery in 1956 and the Marines followed in 1957. The "Skyhawk" was a single seat attack fighter-bomber. Small and light weight compared to similar aircraft of that time, gave it a relatively short take-off and landing characteristic which was suitable for aircraft carrier landing and primitive air fields. Powered by a single Pratt&Whitney turbojet engine with 11,500 lbs of thrust, the A-4 had a 670 mph speed at sea level and a range of 900 miles. Initial avionics were upgrade creating a distinctive dorsal hump on A-4F. Armed with twin 20 mm cannons and up to 8,000 lbs of conventional bombs, cluster bombs, "Bull Pup" air to surface missiles, or "Shike" anti-radar missiles.
