Grumman G-64/HU-16 "Albatross"

Success of the Grumman "Goose" during WWII for being a reliable amphibian seaplane, prompted the U.S. Navy to proceed in 1944 with a larger and longer range search and rescue aircraft. The Grumman G-64, "Albatross" first flew in 1947, powered by a pair of 1050 hp, (9)cylinder radial engines, the range of the aircraft exceeded 2,800 miles, had a crew of 4, seated 10 and a cruising speed of 150 mph or a Max. speed of 235 mph. Later models were designated a HU-16 series and had improved deicing systems, expanded internal and external systems utilizing the set of under wing pontoons and drop tanks. The Navy, Coast Guard, Air Force utilized the "Albatross" as a utility or search and rescue aircraft in all areas of the globe, including regions of the Arctic Oceans.
