Fairchild C-123 "Provider"

 

The Fairchild C-123 "Provider" is another aircraft that began in the 1940's with the on set of WWII. Its original design began as a heavy frame assault/cargo glider for the US Army Air Corps by the Chase Aircraft Company in 1943. After the end of WWII the aircraft frame was developed to accept (2) Pratt and Whitney engines and first flew in 1949 as the C-123 and manufactured by Kaiser-Frazer that had acquired the Chase Aircraft Company. In 1953, the USAF transferred the "Provider" over to Fairchild who continued to manufacture and develop variants of the aircraft. As a tactical transport the "Provider" was well suited to short runways and heavy loads. Powered by (2) 2,300 hp engines it could carry either 60 combat troops, 50 medivac units with 12 attendants or a cargo capacity of 30,000 lbs. Its role in Vietnam was reliable, but never achieved the notability as the Lockheed C-130 "Hercules." A variant, the UC-123K was designed as a jungle defoliant aircraft and is often depicted as the aircraft spraying "Agent Orange."
