De Havilland DHC-4 "Caribou"

 

Developed in 1956, and first flown in 1958, the "Caribou"was a successful commercial and military cargo/transport with Short Take-Off and Landing (STOL) characteristics. It was used extensively during the Vietnam War logging many hours into remote and otherwise inaccessible locations with supplies and reinforcements. Powered by twin Pratt&Whitney 1,450 hp radial piston engines, it had a maximum air speed of 220 mph and a range of 250 miles. Its gross weight empty was only 18,200 lbs and could carry a maximum cargo of 10,000 lbs. Its wings were mounted high upon the fuselage to maximize cabin space, primary access was through a rear trap door ramp which rose abruptly towards the tail allowing for nose-up take offs.
