Boeing C/KC-197

In 1942 the U.S. Army Corps examined the feasibility of converting their large B-29 " Super Fortress" bomber into a cargo/transport. The result was a aircraft designated the Boeing 367 which first flew in November 1944. Examination of the Boeing 367 reflects the B-29 in its engine, wings, tail and lower fuselage. As a long range transport it had the desirable capacity carrying 130 troops, with a range of 4,200 miles and a maximum air speed of 375 mph. In 1947, the first production aircraft were designated C-97, with additional development during the late 1940's spawning the KC-97 as a transport or tanker sporting a distinctive tail boom for in-flight refueling.
